Emperor’s Cup Preview: Arterivo Wakayama v Fujieda MYFC

Arterivo matchThis Saturday sees Fujieda MYFC travel take on Kansai Soccer League club Arterivo Wakayama in the first round of the Emperor’s Cup.

Fujieda MYFC team news
After fielding an unchanged team last week, which saw over JFL side Honda FC 7-2. manager Musashi Mizushima will probably not make any changes for this Saturday’s game.

Fujieda are now unbeaten in three, with two wins and a draw and they will go into this match as favourites, playing against a side two divisions below them.

Italian-Ghanaian defender Desmond has missed the last three games so there is a possibility he could return to the side for this match. However, a lack of discipline as troubled Desmond in recent weeks and it may not be worth changing a winning side just to include him.

Elsewhere, former Japanese international defender Daisuke Ichikawa has made substitute appearances in Fujieda’s last two games as he returns to fitness after a lengthy period out. He may be fit to start this Saturday.

Arterivo Wakayama have been Emperor’s Cup regulars in the past three years, despite only being formed in 2007 and playing all their football in the Kansai Soccer League.

They have qualified for the cup every year since 2009 but have only made it past the first round once in that time. That was in 2012, when after beating FC Gifu’s second team in round one, suffered a heavy 5-0 loss in the second round to Shimizu S-Pulse.

Last season, they almost made it through to round two but after going 2-0 against Fujieda, MYFC fought back and won 3-2 in extra time.

They will be looking avenge that defeat this Saturday. They qualified for this years’ cup by winning 7-0 last week against Kainan FC in the Wakayama Cup final.

However, the club’s league form this year has been average. The club play in one of Japan’s fifth tier divisions, Kansai Soccer League Division 1 and they currently sit in 4th place out of 8 teams. After a slow start though, Arterivo have won their last two league games.

The club also boasts an impressive strike force. They have the league’s top scorer in Yusuke Onishi, who has 8 goals in the league this year as well as a hat trick he scored in last week’s 7-0 win over Kainan. 190cm tall striker, could be a handful for Fujieda defenders.

Arterivo also have former Japan international striker Yuichiro Nagai in their ranks. The former Urawa Red Diamonds forward was a major signing for a fifth tier club but has struggled to find any form this year. He did score in the 7-0 win last week though.
