Emperor’s Cup Review: Júbilo Iwata 2-0 Fujieda MYFC

Despite a brave performance, Fujieda MYFC fell to a 2-0 defeat to Júbilo Iwata in the second round of the Emperor’s Cup. The team which currently sits in 2nd place in J2, were just too strong for Fujieda but there’s no doubt that the J3 side can take heart from their performance.

Fujieda starting line-up

There were two changes to the side which defeated Arterivo Wakayama last week in the first round. Masato Mizuki and Takumi Hashimoto dropped to the bench and were replaced by Ken Hisatomi and Shogo Nakatsuru.

On the seven man bench, Daisuke Ichikawa was absent but there was a return for Desmond amongst the substitutes.

Júbilo lined up with a 4-4-2 formation but top scorer Ryoichi Maeda was missing from the squad altogether. Brazilian striker Popó did start up top though, the club’s second top goalscorer.

Fujieda were heavy underdogs but they battled well in the first half, staying solid at the back. This meant the first half was pretty uneventful, the only real event being a yellow card for Júbilo defender Tomohiko Miyazaki in the 26th minute.

Half time saw a change for the frustrated hosts as Popó went off for another striker in Yoshiro Abe.

Despite the change, Fujieda remained firm. That was until the 61st minute then when Júbilo were awarded a penalty after a foul in the box. Striker Hidetaka Kanazono took the penalty and converted it for his second goal of the season to make it 1-0 to the home side.

Many substitutions then followed from both sides, as Fujieda looked for a way back into the match and Júbilo tried to hold onto their lead.

Eventually, the hosts extended their lead to make sure of the victory when Kanazono scored his second of the match in the 90th minute to make the final score 2-0 to the J2 side.
